Becoming a woman isn’t easy. It’s takes more than being able to have a baby and way more than having a cooch. Being a real woman, a woman of class and character comes from the foundation you were raised with. The foundation in any family comes from our grandmothers. Our grandmothers, raised our parents, they help raised us. Our grandparents walked in the shadows of us never complaining. They stepped back and lived their whole life for their family, they dedicated their entire life to see us grow, to see us become everything they’d hoped we be. They went without for their kids, and even after there kids became grown they lived for their grandkids. Never missing a beat, there was grandma holding everything together. Never complaining, she kept on going until the end.
From a very young age, I was taught to be a lady. I was taught how a woman in supposed to carry herself. I can never even remember hearing my grandmother utter a cuss word. So dedicated, so loyal she stood strong and fearless and fought to keep her family together. Even when she became ill I never heard my grandmother complain. She was a woman grounded deep into her faith, a praying woman who prayed for us daily. A woman who didn’t back down, a talented woman; she could make anything and I mean anything from food, to clothes down to seat covers my grandmother did it all. Her strength was iron clad; I’ve never seen her break down even when I thought she should have.
Even when she said she was tired she was still up cleaning and moving around. I still can’t understand how a woman could love so much, like she did. Give so much of her to others until she didn’t have any left for herself, yet she kept on going. My grandma always had a smile on her face, giving God praise for upbeat spirit even on her bad days. I know I wouldn’t be half the woman I am today without her guidance, knowledge and prayer.
My grandmother was always harder on us girls, growing up I never understood why she would stay on us more. Rather it was cooking, cleaning, taking care of ourselves, the way we dressed, combed our hair, talked, acted or sat. My grandmother stayed on us because she was molding us into young ladies. Now that I am a grown woman with a daughter myself I appreciate my grandmother keeping her foot in our backs. I understand her saying “you don’t sit like that”, “comb your hair” “don’t worry about what the boys do, you’re a girl” “sit steal” “you ain’t to grown for a womping” I sit back now and think of all her talks she had with us. I understand that she wasn’t being hard she was teaching us how to carry ourselves. She was instilling morals, values, self-respect, pride and dignity into us; things a young woman should have instilled within her before she heads out into this cold world.
Now that I am grown I can see that, the making of a woman starts when she is a child. It starts after the first sentence she speaks, the first lie she tells and the first time she try’s you (and you beat that azz). Helping her grow into a lovable, respectful young woman starts with a rock solid foundation and it will always start with our grandparents.
My grandmother spent her entire life making sure that we grew into respectable young women. I am very glad that I was blessed to have a solid, strong, everlasting, supportive grandmother who stood strong to the very end. I know I can speak for all my cousin because they would agree with me; she was and she will forever be the best G Ma. In her passing I will promise to pass the torch on to my daughter as my mother did to me and keep the very foundation that my grandmother spent her whole life building stay together.
My grandmother always said; be a lady, stay classy and be about your family! Ladies the makings of a woman starts now not later let’s start raising our daughters.

You know it doesn?t make much sense
There ought to be a law against
Anyone who takes offense
At a day in your celebration
??cause we all know in our minds
That there ought to be a time
That we can set aside
To show just how much we love you
And I?m sure you would agree
It couldn?t fit more perfectly
Than to have a world party on the day you came to be
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday
I just never understood
How a man who died for good
Could not have a day that would
Be set aside for his recognition
Because it should never be
Just because some cannot see
The dream as clear as he
That they should make it become an illusion
And we all know everything
That he stood for time will bring
For in peace our hearts will sing
Thanks to martin luther king
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday
Why has there never been a holiday
Where peace is celebrated
All throughout the world
The time is overdue
For people like me and you
Who know the way to truth
Is love and unity to all god?s children
It should never be a great event
And the whole day should be spent
In full remembrance
Of those who lived and died for the oneness of all people
So let us all begin
We know that love can win
Let it out don?t hold it in
Sing it loud as you can
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday
Happy birthday
Happy birthday
Happy birthday
Ooh yeah
Happy birthday…
We know the key to unify all people
Is in the dream that you had so long ago
That lives in all of the hearts of people
That believe in unity
We?ll make the dream become a reality
I know we will
Because our hearts tell us so
Have a wonderful day !
