Jay-Z will release his memoir, Decoded this winter. The book has been completed for a few years now but the New York MC was initially hesitant to release the project. Decoded was created with help from Dream Hampton, the former editor of The Source, and features interviews with Jay-Z along with members of his family and friends. In the book, the superstar reflects back on his childhood days growing up in Brooklyn’s Marcy Projects and his rise to the top of the rap game.
Talking about the project with Rolling Stone, Jay, who is known for being private, admitted to the website, that he wasn’t comfortable with how much fans would learn at first but it will give them a chance to understand his thought process.
“It’s too much,” said Jay. “For the book, I was interviewed, people close to me were interviewed. So I was learning a lot of things I didn’t know as a child. It’s not anything I haven’t said in the past, in songs. It’s just more detailed. A song is three minutes long. A book doesn’t have to rhyme, and it has no time limit, so you can say exactly how everything went.”
Aside from some of the personal aspects of his life, Decodedwill also break down a few of The Blueprint 3 rapper’s past song lyrics. “I’m going to pick the select [song lyrics], all the double entendres and things that people may have missed or may have gotten but want confirmation on it. That’s what the book is about, it’s called Decoded,” revealed Jay during a radio interview last year.
Speigel & Grau will publish Decoded, which will hit stores on November 16th.
