Former Fugees member Wyclef Jean will officially announce tonight (August 5) on CNN’sLarry King Live that he will run for President of Haiti, his native land.
After many rumors of the past few days, Jean has confirmed the voices that wanted him as a candidate for the prestigious political chair. The deadline to hand in all the necessary paperwork for his race is in two days (August 7).
According to statistics, if Wyclef decides to run for President, he will have high chances of being the perfect candidate due to his wide popularity in Haiti and his financial efforts to help the country with Yele Haiti, a charitable organization he is founder of.
In an interview for Time.com, the singer claimed that, “If not for the earthquake, I probably would have waited another 10 years before doing this. The quake drove home to me thatHaiti can’t wait another 10 years for us to bring it into the 21st century.”
The elections will take place on November 28 and Jean will run with Haiti’s former Chamber of Deputies leader Pierre Eric Jean-Jacques and his Ansanm Nou Fo Party.
“If I can’t take five years out to serve my country as President, then everything I’ve been singing about, like equal rights, doesn’t mean anything,” said the Fugees rapper.
