During a recent interview, Nicki Minaj emphasized the importance of her forthcoming album’s success and said that how her project performs can directly effect the chance other female MCs have of coming out. According to Minaj, if she, with all her buzz, is incapable of selling well, then record labels won’t look for other female rappers to sign.
“[Young Money] won’t look to sign other female rappers if the project doesn’t do well, because they’re going to say, ‘Well, her buzz was so crazy, and if she couldn’t do it, then no one can do it,’ and I don’t want that to happen,” said Minaj during an interview on Atlanta’s V-103 radio station.
“So I’m doing this as well for all the girls…I hope it will open doors for all girls everywhere who ever wanted to pick up a mic and rap and who have been kind of afraid to do it.”
The Massive Attack rapper is slated to release her debut LP, Pink Friday on November 23rd, the Tuesday before Black Friday. The project’s second single Your Love, which was released in June, peaked at the top of Billboard’s Rap Songs chart, making the femcee the first female artist to appear on the chart unaccompanied since 2002.
